Concept
Hardware Product Development
Hosain Rahman's lecture frames hardware product development as full-stack product building: hardware, software, data, design, supply chain, brand, retail, and user experience must work together.
Full-stack challenge
Hardware products are systems, not isolated devices. A strong product has to integrate mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software, industrial design, manufacturing, data processing, packaging, support, and business model.
Product development phases
The Jawbone process described in the lecture moves through exploration, validation, concept, and development. Early phases are creative and demo-driven; later phases require product management, engineering, supply-chain discipline, retail planning, and launch readiness.
Distinctive hardware risks
- Iteration loops are slower and more expensive than software.
- Quality failures become physical and operational, not just bugs.
- Manufacturing and supply-chain constraints shape product decisions.
- The product has to be useful, beautiful, and reliable in the real world.
