Concept
Metabolism as a Health Model
In Kate Deering's How to Heal Your Metabolism, health is defined less as weight, lab normality, or visible fitness and more as a high cellular energy state. A well-functioning metabolism should produce warmth, good digestion, restorative sleep, clear mood, adequate libido, fertility, immunity, and resilient body composition.
Markers Deering uses
- Morning and daytime body temperature, aiming roughly towards 97.8–98.6°F.
- Resting pulse, often framed as roughly 75–90 bpm.
- Warm hands and feet.
- Regular bowel movements.
- Stable energy, appetite, mood, and sleep.
- Good libido, menstrual/hormonal health, hair, skin, nails, digestion, and immunity.
Mental model
The model treats the body like an energy economy. When thyroid-led energy production is strong, the body can repair, digest, reproduce, sleep, and tolerate stress. When energy production is weak, the body compensates with adrenaline and cortisol, producing short-term functionality but long-term fragility.
How to use this page
This is a useful self-observation lens, not a diagnostic system. Temperature, pulse, sleep, stool, mood, and food tolerance can reveal patterns that a single lab value misses, but they are affected by infection, medication, anxiety, menstrual cycle, fitness, caffeine, hydration, and environment.
